The key to overcoming rhythmic challenges is through thoughtful movement, as evidenced by the Dalcroze Eurythmics method of music study. The Eurythmics approach encourages a student to experience musical rhythm, or other music elements (such as tempo and dynamics), as an internal experience. They then express that musical understanding in assorted improvised movements. The body becomes a real-time interpreter of the musical concepts expressed through motion. In this educational approach, the student is then ready to bring this well-developed understanding of music to the piano.
According to Dalcrozeusa.org, the Swiss composer and educator began to explore children's natural, instinctive gestures. He invited students to walk and swing their arms, or to conduct while they sang or listened to him improvise at the piano. He called this study of music through movement “eurhythmics,” from the Greek roots “eu” and “rythmos” meaning “good flow.” Dalcroze Education is an interactive way to further develop skill in keen listening, music literacy and performance.
With a focus on rhythmic musical expression, Eurythmics encourages a student to experience rhythms, and other musical elements, and express that understanding through improvised movements. A student learns to simultaneously hear, understand and express the musical idea through motion. So the body interprets and expresses musical elements such as rhythm, meter, melody and dynamics in real-time. Music becomes a full-body experience. The student can then apply their experience of musical concepts to their piano playing. A group approach to music study.
"Typically the Dalcroze educator engages students to discover concepts through kinesthetic experience before addressing the subject in theoretical or written form. This experience involves improvisation, which is a way for students to “play with” and internalize a subject, making it their own. Students cannot expect to gain a Dalcroze Education from a book or video alone; they must experience this type of education in the classroom."
